How-To Tuesday: How to save your hair from utter destruction

My hair dresser has been telling - nay - begging me for years to stop washing my hair every day. The very idea of that grossed me out beyond belief and I always smiled, promised, and left the salon with no intention of changing my ways.

My newest stylist finally got through to me. Her persuasion was much more effective with the idea of a dry shampoo. One that would help remove dirt, sweat, and oil, making my hair actually feel clean, even when it wasn't. Just think -- not washing your hair every day saves you at least 182 blow dries, flat irons, and wear and tear per year. (How sad is it that I had to get a calculator for that number? Math be not my strong suit. English either, from the looks of that last sentence.)

ANYway. Here's what you do: First, get this product. It is not cheap, but well worth the price. (And goes a lot further if your boys don't mistaken it for hairspray and slather it all over their mohawks. Bad boys.)

Second, pull all your hair up and out of the way. Take a picture of your unmade-up face and quickly put it on the internet before you change your mind.

Next, shower as usual, washing all your body parts with the exception of your hair. Keep that dry and unwashed.

Then, get dressed (properly. Not like this.) and let your hair down. Lean over and spray dry shampoo at the roots all over. Run your fingers through your hair to work the product in.

Lastly, style as desired. Voila! Non-greasy, non-grimy, clean feeling, soft hair without the damage of a blow dryer, flat iron, and shampoo.

I am telling you, I was a very big skeptic on this concept. But really? My hair actually looks cuter on days that I don't wash it. What they have been saying to us for years is true. Don't do it every day. Save your hair. I have noticed a huge difference with less damage and breakage. It really works, and with a good dry shampoo, you will never notice the difference.

Your turn. Teach me.

I'm a die hard daily washer. I can't even imagine this working but you're the 3rd person who has sworn by this product. I need to believe it but I'm so afraid of greasiness.

I have wondered about dry shampoo. I may have to look into this.

I used a dry shampoo last year after my car accident and was surprised at how effective it was in at least making my hair look better. I never thought about using it on a regular basis but your hair looks great. Hmmm, this could have some possibilities. I'm going to resurrect it and give it a try!
Thanks

Have I told you what an amazing idea this is?!? I Love your How-to-Tuesdays... ALmost makes me want to blog. You have some incredible readers... I am learning SO much.

You rock, my friend!

This sounds like it would work for you and one of my daughters. I've been forced for years to skip days of washing the hair because of my hair. If I washed it every day I'd have a dry, scary afro--no matter how much I conditioned it. Maybe I'll have to do a How-To on freaking curly hair.

It doesn't surprise me that you are instructing people to be less clean.

Wow, who knew? Never even heard of it. I wash every other day, but most of the time I get my hair wet because that at least helps. But it doesn't help with skipping the styling! I think I may have to try this baby out. Thanks!

I love my dry shampoo, it's awesome! this is a random tid bit, but try Moroccan Oil on your hair. it's amazing!!

Does this still work after a nasty daily workout? If so, it IS miracle stuff.

after you get used to every other day, try doing every third day (but a pony tail is probs best the third day). it sounds disgusting, but the less you wash your hair, the less oil it will produce, so it's kind of like training your head to be less oily.
ill have to try that dry shampoo. i usually just use baby powder if needed, which seems to work pretty well.

Great tip! Oh, and I always look forward to Daniel's How-to posts. And his comments. He's weird. He reminds me of one of my brothers. :)

I love skipping a day between washings. I don't use any product in my hair other than an oil to help straighten it before I blow it dry. Since I went with straight hair, I can go 2-3 days (and even 4!) between washings. HOWEVER, when I'm due for a color touch up, I hate skipping a wash because I think it makes the gray more noticeable. Maybe the dry shampoo will help because I'm sure it's just the oil that makes the hair heavier and the gray roots more prominent. Thanks for the recommendation - I'll try it out!!

I have been wondering if dry shampoo was all it was cracked up to be. Your lovely mane is proof positive. I must try. - Cares

Ok, I'm in. I've been wanting to do it but have been weary. I'll give it a try because my hair is seriously damaged and could use a break.

I preach the "do not wash your hair everyday" to all of my clients too! It is SOOOO much better for you hair! I'm glad you found something that works. It is so not gross. I wash my hair every other day when I style it curly, and then I go for like 4-5 days when I straighten it. And no one every knows! So next time you are in Utah I will get you your dry shampoo spray at my discount ;-) but only cuz I love you!

It took me a long time to convert too but my sister finally got me to try it. Sometimes I even go 2 (gasp) days without washing it. I looooove not having to blowdry. Love it.

I don't wash my hair every day unless it's summer. (No amount of product can get 120 degree mail truck dirt out of your hair, trust me.)

Although, most days I'm sporting a pony tail. I don't even think I know where my hair dryer is...

What brand of dry shampoo do you use? I've bought a few at Target (they were wet out of the bottle) and I hated them.

You are such a hotty, but I have to agree with Dan on this one! My slightly OCD, never go to the store without being ready for the day (although I am making progress on this one) friend counseling others on the joys of dirty hair? I am so proud of you!!! I will be buying it tomorrow, tossing the ball cap, and hiding it from my girls!!

Excellent advice! I went to the every other day wash a couple of years ago and love it. And my hair has totally adjusted! Although I find that the blonder I am the greasier it gets the second day. I usually use baby powder, which is ok but not great. I tried the Tresemme brand and thought it was gross. I'm going to hit Tristan up for a bottle. Thanks!

I only wash my hair every third day (gasp!) and I work out every day (gasp again!) It took me years to realize that my hair looks waaaay better on the second and third day then on the first (hello body!)

Love this post.

I'm going to be looking for that product! Your fabulous looking hair was the selling point for me.

As to my offering for this week's "how to"...I'm sorry and I debated whether to add it or not. Maybe someone will find it funny? I'm enjoying your "how to's" and everyone else's also.

Da#@! You have good hair! If yours looks that good than I really should give it a try...

I know I always say this...but seriously LOVE your writing. You make me laugh...even while blogging about dry shampoo.

I am completely and totally fascinated by dry shampoo. I am going to have to try it.

You are so right. I use KMS dry shampoo and it is the bomb. On our trip, I only washed my hair like 4 times in 2 weeks. For real. The best stuff.

I love not washing my hair every day. Although, it took me a long time to get to that point! It's so much healthier and smoother, now. And day two or three is always better than day one. I can't go longer than three days, though!

I've wondered about dry shampoo and it's nice having a product to try rather than being hit and miss.

I am SO trying this!

P.S. I'm a silent lurker...but I love your blog.

Dry shampoo is my FAVORITE hair product (along with a moroccan oil).

I use dry shampoo even after I have washed my hair if I am going to be styling it with a lot of volume. It adds lift and texture. I have really thick hair and dry shampoo has become my bff.

PS- you are gorgeous!

I got the tigi Rockopolis dry shampoo. Is that good enough or do I have to get the salon sessions one??? I am afraid. I have the greasiest hair ever, ever, ever. The Tre Semme was nasty, powder works OK. So I'm making an investment here. tell me if I need to return Rockopolis and get the other stuff.

By the way you are so cute and will never look old because of your darling freckles.

So what brand of dry shampoo are you using? I clicked on the link and it goes no where, probably because I"m reading this 6 weeks after you posted. Please reply with the brand. I want to try this. Thanks!
