My love affair with the mailbox

One of my favorite things about the month of December is the good mail.

- The samplings so far this year -

Instead of the usual bills, home refinance offers, bills, realtor advertisements, and bills (did I mention the bills?), my mailbox brings me love in card form.

As I have said in the past, I love to send them. But I love even more to receive them.

I savor that half-hour after the mail comes, reading each card over and over. I study the pictures of long lost friends. I smile, as I notice just how much their kids have grown since last year. I read the Christmas letters. Yes, every. single. word.

I love them.

But I had to laugh when the mailbox yielded a few unexpected cards this year:
Looks innocent enough, right? When you open the inside, you see this:

Yes, our trash man left us a card this year.

How nice of him. Now when I see him dumping our gigantic piles of waste into the garbage truck, I will feel just a tad bit guilty. I'll think, "Sorry, Terron, for the gigantic piles of waste." Instead of my usual thought of, "Oh, there's the trash man."

I hate feeling guilty.

The other card that made me laugh came from some of the Husband's closest, best, and most special friends. The outside looked like this:

And the inside looked like this:

You know you are traveling WAY too much when one of the many hotels you frequent sends you a Christmas card.

And what's worse? He actually knows most of the people who signed it. Me thinks it might be time to stay home for a while. Get to know some of the actual people who live in Missouri.

You know. WHERE YOU LIVE.

How about you, internets? Gotten any unexpected cards in the post this year?

I love that your trash man sent you a card! Too funny. I guess garbage men are people too, huh?

Please post about about the card you receive from the UPS man, okay :)

I crack myself up. Love you, Stie!

Wow, you've gotten a ton already. I posted about mine today, too. Took the pic of them as well. We share the Gab card in common. How sweet of your trash man. You should have something for him when he comes next.

I didn't see the Janet-o-Gram on your christmas card wall.

Believe it or not I have stayed in that hotel. It is no luxery let me tell you, but about the best in the area!

Oh, and I think the garbage man wants to card with tip in it! My milkman does that every year...so we know who to make the card out to! Kind of funny. I have never tipped my garbage men, they spend time digging through our trash and picking out treasures each week anyway (SERIOUS!!)

Nothing unusual- except for one from a creepy couple at church. I hope you give Terron a nice gift this Christmas.:)

I'm curious- Could the Grand Rapids Airport be Grand Rapids, Michigan?! As in my hometown?! I am very curious to know who 'The Husband' works for that takes him to GR.

We were tight with our garbabe men growing up. My mom would bring them plates of freshly baked cookies so they would take extra garbage from us. I'm pretty sure we got cards.

Where's me? It's coming. I like how you put yourself right smack dab in the middle.

Paige came over yesterday and I had to steal my friends cards to put on my door so that I could look more popular than her.

Not really, but I thought about it.

Clearly his wife/girlfriend or daughter signed that card. I had similar writing when I was in jr. high.

Come to think of it, that may have been a man's handwriting after all.

My husband gets a similar card from the Marriott he stays at too. I like him making friends with the workers there, they usually hook him up with extra Marriott points. One day I plan to stop having babies so Dan and I can go on a vacation courtesy of Mr. Marriott.

LOL. I'd worry about the Marriott cards if they ever come smelling like perfume and with hearts and xxooxx on them...:)

Do you know other people who tape their cards on the inside of their front doors? I don't know anyone except...ME! I struggled for years to figure out a fun way to display them and then one day my husband began putting them on the door, and it was a hit!

Mine's still coming! (My double closet doors look just like yours--it's where we put the cards, too) I got one from our newspaper guy and from my hairdresser. The newspaper guy wants a tip (and got one, thanks to G).

I'm with Lauren! Be sure and tell us what you get from the UPS guy!

So where's the card from your UPS man? Is it too racy to show?

HA! Love the hotel card! We actually got a photo card from Dave Ramsey and his wife this year! We ordered his book about six months ago. Of course, inside the card it talked about the great deals you can get on his products and how they make great gifts, etc...Seriously? Using holiday cards for Marketing. How low have we gone???

every year i look forward to my cards from two different families...one is always incredibly dorky (I mean BAD) and in the other they're always trying to be models...always good for a laugh.

Lauren stole my comment.

I love, love, LOVE Christmas cards too! I never check my mail other than in the month of December.
The box is down the street in a neighborhood box, and I just never get there.

Somehow in December, the walk isn't as far!

So the trashman is totally fishing for a tip. And according to some holiday tipping article I read, you are supposed to tip him (along with a small gift for the mail carried, newspaper delivery, milkman, the list goes ON AND ON). But, I ask, how??? Leave a gift on top of the trashcans and hope it doesn't get thrown away? I don't get this one.

Christmas card from the trashman...now I have heard it all.

Was that a smudge on the trash man's card? Did he smear a little trash on there? It's probably just a shadow the camera picked up, but I really wish it were a smudge.

I rec'd a surprise card from my cousin. I was delighted and I feel like it makes me cool by association.

You have recieved WAY more than I have. I too love to check the mail this time of year. We haven't gotten any interesting ones though. Just the usual. I guess our trash man just doesn't love us the same way. :(

The UPS man should send you a card for making his day. The trashman is definately fishin' for tips...isn't good garbage tip enough?

Joy & Casey said...

Hey! I sent your card today...you posted this a day or 2 too early because that is THE card you've been waiting for. You thought the trash man card was spectacular! :) What do you put in your trash for him?????
Have a great day!
Love,
Joy

What I want to know is, where's your card from the UPS man???

I love all the good mail this time of year too! I have yet to send out my cards...isn't that awful? I have never procrastinated it this long...

By the way, last night I had a dream that you were living in Cedar City and I thought it was so great to have you close by!

Always excited to get YOUR card! Unfortunately, you will not be getting my card this year. Got overwhelmed and left that as one of the items to do once I got out here to my mom's (we're in St. George right now). I brought my photo, but forgot my addresses--sorry. But so you know, it was going to be a cheap one from costco--just like the one on your door, bottom right with the red toile-ish background. Just think of my smiling face on it wishing you a happy Christmas!

kelly said...

you must be treating your trash man right, if you're getting a christmas card from him... so that's who you turn to when the hubby is gone!

I love it!!! Even the trashman wants a piece of the action!!!

I've nominated you for an award. Head on over to inmates to pick it up!

LOVE the cards...& I, too, want to know about the card from the UPS man. Great minds obviously think alike!

I loved catching up on your blog posts! Hilarious as always!

Merry Christmas Stie! Sending the warmest wishes to you an yours.

yes... good ol' terrance sent me a card too.

what i am wondering is, how on earth do you tip the guy?

because, you know, an envelope would look like, well, trash and a plate of goodies on top of the garbage can would be, umm, gross.

should i sit be the window waiting for him to come by?

what a dilemma!
