Lost in translation

Yesterday, the Princess brought home the usual backpack full of wrinkled papers and glue-sticked art projects for me to sift through and admire.

I paused when I got to this one, and I found myself unable to translate it without her help. Apparently, they were smelling things, and then writing down what they had smelled. As is the nature of the kindergarten classroom, each child had to sound-spell the words without any help from the teacher. Hannah took it upon herself to add her own rating system, giving each item a smiley or frowny face based on whether or not she liked the smell.

So here's the game. If you can decipher her excellent writing and figure out all seven things correctly, I will send you a prize. I'm not sure what that prize will be, but it will most likely involve food of some sort. Chocolate food, my favorite kind.

Contest ends at noon tomorrow.

Good luck. You're gonna need it.

I am so not going to win. #1 has me truly stumped...but here are my answers for the rest.
2.soap {apparently bad smelling}
3.cotton balls
4.cinnamon
5.coffee
6.pickles
7.soap {and this kind must have smelled better than the first kind}

Do I win 1/2 a prize?

Ashlee said...

Wait! Is #1 nothing?

Maybe 2 or 7 could be soup instead of soap both times?

#1 is a doozy, I have no idea.
2. soap
3. cotton balls
4. cinnamon
5. coffee
6. I had no idea on this one except pencils, but I like Ashlee's pickles better.
7. a better soap

Here goes:
1. new fig (as in Newton)
2. soap
3. cotton balls
4. cinnamon (please, please don't be semen)
5. coffee
6. pieces (as in Reese's)
7. soap

I'm guessing soap twice because I bet they had a yucky smelling one and a yummy one. Number 1 may also be nougat?

4. cinnamon (also, initially saw semen)
5. COffee (I'm with her on the yuck face).
6. Peas
7. Bad smelling soap.

#3 cottonballs( i just smelled mine...no smell)

#4cinnamon( first thought..semen too!)

#5 coffee

#6Pickles or Pepsi(my kids suggestion)

#7Soap(probably from Bath and Body)

1. Something fudge
2. Soap
3. Cotton balls
4. Cinnamon
5. Coffee
6. Pickles (Shaelyn thought peas)

Let's hope she takes after you with her spelling when she gets older. Shaelyn had a easier time with this than I did.

So, I just had a Jessica moment about my comment when I told my husband about the creative spelling.

Sorry for being off-color.

I'm not a crazy freak. At least most of the time. :)

I think it's rediculous that the public school system exposes children to that type of material at such a young age... It's truly despicable. Can't they leave the teaching of this stuff to the parents. Schools are always overstepping their bounds.

Thanks to the useful Microsoft word...I have figured out what she is smelling....and I have a question....

1) Hufag = "Hoffa" As in Jimmy....
2) Sop = Sop (Synonym Pacifier)..it is a frowny because it was probably a used one with dried spit smell.
3)Senmen = Sunman...I guess some tanning lotions smell good.
4) Cotibolls = Cot Bolls..a sleeping cot made out of bolls (The seed-bearing capsule of certain plants, especially cotton...guess they were trying to make it comfy...which leads us to the next translation)
5) Cofy = Comfy...guess they were sniffing their nap time mats)
6) Pecls = Peels, and by the look of the frowny face, it was something good like orange peels.
7) Sop = Sop (Synonym = offering) they were smelling money...not that money smells good, but money just makes a person smile!

And my question is....what kind of school do you take your daughter to that lets her smell things like that? ha ha ha, jk!

I think I may be the closest yet! ha ha.

My real guess...

1)nothing (not that i am not guessing, but i think they had her smell something empty....or there was not an object placed in front of her, she just sniffed....does that make sense?)
2)soup
3)cottonballs
4)cinnamon
5)coffee
6)pickle
7)soap

laurie, don't feel bad. I had the same "semen" thought. And pecis looked a little close to you-know-what. But then I thought. Nah.

I'm just glad I wasn't alone.

And I know Stie can handle off color :)

I am totally stumped with the first one...but the rest I would say, soap, cottonballs, cinnamon, coffee, pickles, and soap (again).

I'm glad to see that Taylor isn't the only one who spells this way...it's very cute isn't it? I tried to get her help in sounding out the first one and she didn't know, but whoever guessed hot fudge, I would say is the closest!

3. cotton balls
4. cinnamon - I'm with everyone else, looked like semen.
5. coffee
6. (Reces') Pieces
7. soup

Hi, I came to visit from the blogaplooza group. I had to laugh and this post. #1 had me dumbfounded.

crystal said...

This is not my official entry, but #4 is scaring me. I won't say aloud what I read that as, but suffice it to say I gasped aloud.

crystal said...

I promise I didn't read any of the other comments because I am very competitive.

1. huffing? why's she huffing in kindergarten, for pete's sake? Stie, you gotta talk to that teacher.
2. soap
3. cottonballs
4. cinnamon (phew! I'm relieved! Thought it was...never mind...)
5. coffee
6. pickles
7. soap

crystal said...

Ok. Now I went back & read the comments. Good to know I'm not the only one who read "semen."

Paige said...

1. nothing
2. soap
3. cottonballs
4. cinnamon, although I thought it was semen too I want to hurl at the thought and wondered about your kid's school and my mind.
5. coffee
6. pickles
7. soap

I just don't understand why we aren't allowed to help our kids with their spelling. I have 2 kindergarteners and 1 first grader and all I can think about is "my kids are illiterate" whenever I see their work. I may have said this outloud at first grade back to school night so now I am the negative mom. Also, if they learn how to spell it wrong won't they always spell it wrong? Why can't I tell them???? I have issues. Spelling issues.

Can't guess because I've read everyone else's: But this is what I thought out before I looked at your smarty pants commenters:

sop - soap or soup
cofy - coffee
cotibolls - cottonballs
pecil - pencil ?

The first one I also wondered about 'nothing'

And I didn't get the cinnamon one. My mind went way wrong there...

Her printing's beautiful, btw.

I would say hot fudge like the others for number 1, but I'd be chaeting... okay I lose.

the rest of my guesses:
soap (or soup)
cotton balls
cinnamon
coffee
pickles
soup (or soap)

and that's that.

;)

I can't enter because I read everyone else's answers....I agree with a lot of the other answers...do I get extra points for being honest about cheating? No? Well, yeah, I don't blame ya...

Lauren in GA said...

I do have to say that I am VERY impressed with her ability to sound things out as a kindergartener. I am not just saying that in hopes to gain points for cheating. :D

Rochelleht said...

I am just laughing at everyone else's ideas. Good entertainment on their own. Bridget, you crack me up! Summer's Camp, too.

Anonymous said...

So, I asked my first grader her interpretation of the words, too. Her answers are in parantheses.

1. Hot fudge (nothing)
2. Soap - bad smelling (soap - bad smelling)
3. Cotton balls (cotton balls)
4. Cinnamon (cinnamon)
5. Coffee (coffee)
6. Pickles (pencils)
7. Soap - good smelling (soap - good smelling)

By the way...she has wonderful handwriting for a kindergartener!
