Inviting you into our bedroom

As I've mentioned countless times before, the Husband's job has [sadly] put him on a first-name basis with the security people at the airport. We get personalized Christmas cards from the hotels he frequents. He's gone. A LOT. And even when he's working at the office in-town, he has very long hours.

Needless to say, his life contains a lot of stress.

Fortunately for me, he unwinds in a very productive manner, which I find I am highly encouraging of.

Internet, meet my new king-sized big girl bed:

Yes, the Husband made that bed. All for me (and I guess for him, too). Let me repeat that: HE MADE THE BED. Made it. Like a mountain man. Or the Amish.

[He does have that secret dream to go off the grid.]

I found a bed that I liked online, showed him the picture, and he drew up plans and worked on it during the weekends.

I could not be more thrilled. We had been sleeping on a ghetto bed since before Chase was born, and it is so nice to finally have a pretty, grown-up bed.

Bedding is the Hanna quilt from Pottery Barn, and is oh, so lovely. Look at that stitching. I just love it:

Pillows are a mash: Some from Target, some sewn together by yours truly with fabric from Joann's:

The Husband has also made me a set of nightstands (which he's not finished staining yet) and he's currently working on a large set of shelves for books/knick knacks that will double as a TV stand.

Here is a picture of the master plan to give you an idea:

After:

(Do you like how I put myself in there? Hopefully, I will have two hands, legs, and most of my bottom when I'm sitting on the bed in real life. Though losing the bottom wouldn't exactly break my heart.)

What do you think?

I'm pretty excited about it all.

Thanks, baby. You are the best.

more than amazing, it is beautiful & looks more solid than any furniture store. I showed James a picture of a white one similar to yours from Ethan Allen and all I got was..."hmmm, that's real nice"

So fun to refresh a room!

That bed is AMAZING!! I also really like the rest of the plans for the room. Maybe one day I'll have a big girl bed too. Although, I don't think my husband is gonig to actually be building it.

Wow--that is amazing! If I'd have known he had those kind of skills I might have tried my feminine wiles on him back in the day. Although I'm sure my 13 year old wiles wouldn't have gotten me very far!

It is AMAZING! So when the Husband is done with your projects I have a few items he can work on next time he's in CA...

It is BEAUTIFUL!

That is the ONLY thing I regret about marrying my hubby. NO HANDYMAN SKILLZ. NONE.

But, NO CAN LIGHTS IN THE BEDROOM STIE! Seriously. When you are on your back, and you have the lights on, you will never be able to see again! Have you ever looked up at a can light that was on? Don't do it. Go for some thing DRAMATIC. Chandelier ala Pottery Barn. Something soft looking, made of fabric or something. It would be awesome. Also, you need some of that fab color on your walls!I am thinking that green color that is on the striped pillows. Just like you have on the background of this blog right now! YEAH!

so now you have McKay to cook for you and Josh to build all the stuff you need--definitely ready to go off the grid. Send us a postcard by way of pony express when you get settled :)
And--I need to call you, been getting a bit tired of MY hubbys job lately and need a pep talk.
AND--we're going to Chicago over Halloween weekend--you guys got plans?
AND--Do you like how I write all my stuff in your comments instead of just sending you an email--sorry

The bed is beautiful. The plan looks great. If you ever figure out out to photoshop a little extra weight off the real, live person, please share with me.

Wow, the Husband did an amazing job!!!! I am so totally impressed with his work, Stie.

The whole room is gonna look fabulous. You have fantastic taste, my friend.

You look beautiful in the picture. Even missing some important body parts.

Very impressive. I agree...the kids over the bed probably not a good idea ;)

LOVE it! I come from a long line of handy men (and General contractors) so I totally appreciate how much work goes into something like that. (And I'm totally jealous by the way.) I'm with you though, no pics of the kids over the bed... that's just weird. :) -J

Very nice!! What's next? A guest bed for you old friends that come to visit? I want a king size bed, oh and an endless supply of diet coke when I come.

Holy Cow! You married someone with some mad skills!!! If he did go of the grid he'd probably have customers lined up around the block! Seriously an awesome skill to have. The bed is lovely. Congratulations on finally graduating to "big kid" status!

At first I thought you meant that he made the bed meaning that he tucked the sheets in and pulled the covers up and arranged the pillows.....and I was pretty impressed.

The fact that he MADE the bed just blows me away. It is beautiful.

danandcindy said...

Really, I could care less about your stupid pillow and blanky... Could you maybe put in a little more detail about HOW your husband MADE THE BED? Or did he just make the bed, and put your little pillows and blankys on neatly? There are some of us out there who actually have an interest in knowing a little more detail about Josh's work, and a lot less detail about whatever you blabbered on about.

I like another person was SOOOOO impressed that your husband "made the bed" that morning before work. That alone made me think, "wow, what a great guy to make the bed". And then I realized it was way bigger than I was thinking. He literally MADE the BED! Carpenter style. What a talent- great job Josh! Very beautiful room and I have to say that I LOVE that TV stand in the corner. You go girl!

Terra said...

Ok, I read the comments and I am certain the bed is amazing! However, I can't see it. Maybe it is my browser but the pictures didn't load for me, so sad!

It's GORGEOUS. Fantastic.

when you say "stain" was it actual stain or did you go for "paint?" I am in the middle of a big bedroom redo and need to fix the old knotty pine bedframe, I love this color! can you share your source? :)

Christie said...

Christine - it is a stain, though it looks like paint in the pictures. It's called India Ink, and they used to use it for tattoos. It's very, very dark, but yet still allows the grain of the wood to show through. You will find it at craft/hobby stores (Hobby Lobby for us here). You rub it on with a cloth or foam brush, wipe off the excess, and then top with a laquer/polyurethane top coat to seal it. Email me if you have any further questions. Best of luck!

that is AMAZING!
when you said that he made the bed, i was like, "Um. Okay. I like when my husband makes the bed too." Then I realized that he MADE that BED!

Love it!

Okay. When you said, "MADE the bed" I thought you meant he made the bed like pulled the sheets up and put the pillows on... I was like, ya-- he did a great job, no wrinkles... but post worthy?

I am a little slow.

LOVE THE BED! Wow, what a talent. I can't wait to see the real after too. :)

Okay, I almost spewed my soup on my monitor reading Lindsey's comment about the lights! Go with her lighting suggestions! Love the bed! I am embarrassed to admit that while I have darling bedding, my bed frame is an old one that belonged to my parents. I want a big girl bed too.

jessica said...

I'm with Shally...totally thought he did the sheets and pillows...I am so impressed!

I love building things. My husband hates it. I come up with a plan and I usually execute it but unfortunately not without his help. He's big, I'm not. I need his brawn. You scored sister...oh and I totally agree with Lindz, get some color on the wall!

Yeah that man is a keeper for sure!
Also can you please buy me a whole heap of PB stuff and send it to me in this far flung craptastic shopping country called Oz.

Okay, so the whole time I'm reading this post I'm thinking he "made" the bed as in made it up. I didn't realize you meant "HE MADE" the entire bed. How awesome is he? I love it!!! You're a lucky gal to have room for such a great big bed.

Margaret said...

Lucky girl. That's exactly the kind of bed I want!
