Her inability to love and appreciate herself fully

I just got a call from a friend who had been helping out with the first grade thanksgiving party at the school.

She had been sitting with a group of children doing an activity, and Hannah was part of her group. The children were taking turns sharing things they were thankful for.

Some were thankful for their families. Some were thankful for their homes. One or two kids were even thankful for school.

It came time for Hannah to share something she was thankful for. Guess what my sweet, selfless girl said?

"I am thankful for myself."

Um, yeah.

Healthy self-esteem, anyone?

  2. Love it! There are too many people in this world who don't have any self-worth. I am so glad to know that Hannah isn't one of them.

  3. My oldest daughter is the same :)

She even writes herself notes in her lunch box and on Valentines Day when we make valentines as a family she always makes hers for herself... some people just love themselves...LOL

  6. Hey, you know...good/great self esteem can be hard to come by, especially in kids. Good for her!! I absolutely LOVE it.

  7. Ditto to all the previous comments. You won't have to worry about her pulling a Britney Spears to prove her awsomeness to anyone.

  8. So funny! We had a couple of kids say the same thing in Primary on Sunday!

  9. So, was the friend Maren? See, if she had a blog you could have hyperlinked "friend" to her blog and... sorry, this isn't about the Mouritsen girls, it is about Hannah. I hope NOTHING in life happens to make her stop being thankful for herself, or stop being able to say it out loud. Go Hannah!

  10. That's great. Good self esteem is something we all want for our kids. Logan said he was thankful for everyone in our family but did not mention Macey... sad. But she does pester him constantly.

  11. Enjoy it while it lasts. I used to worry that my oldest would tell me, "Mommy, I am SO PRETTY!" when she was in kindergarten. All too soon they start being hard on themselves...the curse of being female!

  12. That is so funny! Reminds me of Maren when she looks at herself in the mirror and says " I just can't believe how pretty I am!"

  13. That self esteem will keep her from doing lots of naughty things that girls do because they don't like themselves.

She's adorable and I am thankful for her today also, she made me laugh!!!

  15. I hope she can hang on to that feeling.

  16. Remind her of that often over the next few years.

My kindergartener wrote that he's thankful for "my Dad's gun." Yep, the 2nd Amendment is safe around here.

  17. Hannah can't help it that she is so fabulous!

That is a tribute to your stellar mothering...that your girl has a wonderful sense of self. May she hang onto it for all of her teenage years when everyone feels awkward about themselves.

  19. I am thankful for Hannah too. Her "surpise in utero introduction" that fateful Thanksgiving so many years ago was one of the BEST Hal-Lar turkey day memories ever.

Really missing you guys this week!

Have fun without us. But not too much.

  20. What a cutie! I agree with what everyone else says: She won't have to degrade herself to prove her worth to the world.

  21. I just found your blog through links on other blogs. I'm really enjoying reading it, so I thought I'd say hello! I love the post about what is food and what isn't. Very funny!

  22. She's a very smart girl! Make her repeat that 3 times a day in the mirror for the next 15 years.

  23. Awesome. My 3 year old daughter constantly runs down the list of people she loves--includes me, my husband, our baby and herself (not my other son!). Glad she can list herself.
