Why husbands cannot be trusted

I have resigned myself to the inevitable.

There are just certain things in my life that I have no say in, no matter how much I whine, beg, and plead.

I know it's shocking, as I am the queen of quite a lot around here. I run the schedules, bedtimes, shopping, budget, and even most of the home repairs. But sometimes, the Husband just has to step up and take control, leaving this plan-a-holic gasping for breath.

Oh, the nerve of that man.

Take, for instance, the case of my sweet, angelic boy. One could hardly look into these baby blues and find any trace of malice, misdeed, or negativity.

Now take a look at what happens to my sweet angel the MINUTE, I tell you, THE VERY MINUTE, his father gets a hold of him and takes him for a haircut:

Could it be...Satan?

Lucifer, out back practicing his sweet moves

In truth, I have simply accepted my fate. Every year, on the last week of school, my loving, sensitive middle child is going to always turn punk and sport a mohawk. (See here, and here for proof, if you don't believe me).

I tolerate it for maybe a week or two, and then the mohawk is replaced by a summer buzz cut.

Don't tell him, but secretly I love that he doesn't give a lick what people at school think or care at all if he stands out in the crowd.

His older brother, however, could not be more mortified.

So here's to embracing life fully, doing what feels good, and sporting your own kind of style. May we all find a way to do that in our own lives.

Just preferably not in the barber shop.

P.S. Courtesy of random.org, the winner of the Yanni Voices tickets is Maren! Email me if you can go and I will turn your name in at the will-call box. Thanks, local peeps, for playing along. Maybe someday the sponsors will be generous enough to fly you ALL out here for a little show and a lot of Stie.

If only, right?

My 6 year old has been asking for a mohawk for weeks (this is the same child that's been asking for real tatoo and the one that really likes the gas at the dentist...can you see a pattern here?)

You have convinced me that I should allow it....maybe.

I have to admit, I was a bit startled when I saw the first picture but I think you are a wonderful mom for letting him be himself, if only for a short while. Isn't it amazing how different our kids can be from one another. My boys hair has gotten long and shaggy. I've been trying to let it go because they like it but I think we are going to HAVE to get a trim this weekend :-)

Hilarious!!! You are an incredible mom-never thought you'd have a son with a mohawk-way to let him have his style even if it's just for a week. Can I send Jaycee your way? She could use a little less power struggle even if it's just for a little while! ;)

Love your Satan and Lucifer references.

So when does Hannah get to join this ritual?

You rock Mom! Hair can be easily cut/changed; it's not permanent and what a refreshing outlook on life.

First, he is a beautiful child and he has the prettiest eyes. My son has a need for the mohawk as well and I've given in as far as the faux hawk. I didn't realize I should just let him go hog-wild on the real thing and then shave it into a buzz a couple weeks later. Brilliant. I'm with you--let good kids express their wild side with their hair--it's just hair right?

Hooray for allowing your awesome and quirky baby boy to express himself. Man, I adore that kid.

It looks a lot better this year... you really found a good stylist. I think you should let him dye it blue or red or something. Maybe green.

Sweet! You are good for letting him keep it for a week, mine only get to keep his for and hour! He can actually pull it off.

Yep, that sweet looking boy turned into a little less sweet looking in the next shot. YIKERS! It fits with the karate moves.

way to go, church lady.

you know, i looked pretty deep into those baby blues, as you suggested, and frankly, i saw a bit of stie in there.

that explained it all.

Please never let your husband take your sweet baby girl for a hair cut.

You could call him Laman too. He really does look cute. Probably not the compliment he is looking for. Maybe fierce is a better word.

Good for him!

That is awesome! I almost showed my husband your blog...I'm just not sure if I'm ready for what may result! I do love that Chase doesn't care what others think...my kind of guy! And he makes a mohawk look better than any other I've seen!

The hair cracks me up, I don't know how you are swallowing it and embracing it but I have to give you credit for doing so!

and yes, if only sponsors were that generous!

Boys will be boys. And if hair is your biggest concern about the little cutie...doin' OK!

Yeah, I think you've confirmed your spot as the coolest mom ever to let him keep doing that. I should go do it to my four-year-old right now to see what his father says. Faux-hawks aren't as good as the real thing, right? And I'm pretty sure he's partly the spawn of Satan already.

lol! i have often wondered what i would say if my son asked me for a mohawk or to dye his hair.

my mother would NEVER have let me do it, but i think i'd give in if my son asked.

Love the hawk! Hair grows back. Just be wary when he starts asking about tattoos.

Love the hawk and I just LOVE his personality. His independent spirit and not worrying about what other people think. It's simply wonderful!

When I read the title I thought, "Oh, this is gonna be goooood."

I laughed heartily at your saying, "Oh, the nerve of that man." I love your comedic writing. Of course, I realize you weren't joking...that does take some nerve ;)

And you know what? I agree with you...it is a good thing that he doesn't, "give a lick" what anyone thinks.
