Living with Chase

You know you're living with Chase when...

June 6th is celebrated with all the fanfare of a national holiday.

And in spite of yourself, you know exactly what Operation Overlord is referring to.

You know you're living with Chase when you spend your Sunday morning listening to facts about the D-Day invasion, with him not sparing any of the gory details.

No matter that you're eating breakfast.

You know you're living with Opa's Mini-Me Chase when a first-edition book by Bill Mauldin shows up on your doorstep from the Opa. And is immediately devoured by a blue-eyed boy who treasures it with a reverence not usually seen in kids his age. Especially when it comes to things like old books.

You know you're living with Chase when you are encouraged forced to make a flag cake in honor of the fallen heroes.

And you are told that it must have no more than 13 stripes and no less than 50 stars. "Because anything other than that would be an insult to our country, Mom."

You know you're living with Chase when the phone rings early Sunday morning and it's Opa calling to wish your son a happy D-Day. A call which leaves him beaming from ear to ear, proud and thrilled to know that someone out there feels the exact same way that he does.

And, finally, you know you're living with Chase when you realize six months ahead of time that the next important holiday in his world will roll around on December 7th.

So you'd better get working on your stars. We can't have crooked stars on the flag.

Even if it's only a cake.

  1. The cake is awesome! And good on ya for making it perfectly ;-)

Chase is a cool kid! I immediately knew what the book was about. And I also know what Dec 7th is, A day that will forever live in infamy. My Grandfather fought in Europe in WW2 and brought home some really awesome souvenirs that my Dad inherited. I bet Chase would totally dig that collection.

  3. I'm impressed you are raising such an obvious genius, and equally impressed you made a flag cake with all 50 stars. You are my hero.

That is one neat kid. I love it! I also love your other posts about the vacay and the souvenier shopping. Give yourself a giant pat on the back, you are a pretty amazing mom.

  9. You know that his love of country may eventually pay for med school, get him cheap interest rates on his first home and medical benefits for life. May not be such a bad thing....

I wish there were more people who wholeheartedly loved this imperfect yet wonderful country Chase is my kind of boy! God Bless America.

  12. Barack Obama spent D-Day at a celebration with Kelly Clarkson and Lionel Richie...

    Strangely, no mention of Normandy.

  13. By Pearl Harbor Day, you might need to put an extra star on the flag...

  16. Your label sums it up so nicely, Chase really does display patriotism beyond his years. I am not lying, I promise this is the truth, I thought of Chase on Memorial Day. I thought of how patriotic he is when I was explaining to my boys how we need to remember those who have sacrificed everything for our country.

And, oy, those blue eyes and that dimple...I would be powerless against them. What's that Chase...you say you want a pony? You can have two. They're on me.

Great job in making the cake perfectly, Stie. You make your country proud.
